GO GREEN
With C.L. Smith Construction

Since becoming an Energy Star partner in 2004, I have been on a mission to stay on the cutting edge of advanced construction methods and green building practices. I have received my Certified Green Professional (CGP) designation through the NAHB, and have traveled to numerous green building conferences and seminars to further expand my knowledge. In addition to Energy Star, I am currently working with 3 other Green certification programs that include LEED, NAHB Green, and NC Healthy Built Homes.

While becoming well versed on many phases of green building, my primary focus has been on energy efficiency and indoor air quality. While building a very efficient home may add some to the initial cost, the result will be long term savings with added value and comfort to your home. Indoor air quality is a very important aspect of your home as well that often gets overlooked in the construction process. I educate my clients about the many green practices and products available to them. Each one of my clients places a different level of importance on green building options usually due to their price point. I will help them “value engineer” their home by offering a variety of options to fit most any budget.

At the very least, all of my clients benefit from a home built to Energy Star standards and beyond, which will include:

  • Superior insulation (foam or cellulose) and air extensive sealing (exterior walls and attic to conditioned areas)
  • High quality HVAC systems with multiple units and zones for a more efficient and comfortable home
  • Tight ductwork (less than 5% leakage) - keeps all of your heating and cooing where it needs to be…in your living areas
  • Low E Argon glass is a standard in our windows
  • TechShield on the roof (radiant barrier sheathing) is a standard- reduce attic temperatures by up to 30 degrees
  • Encapsulated (sealed) crawlspace with a commercial grade dehumidifier and mold treatment (to prevent growth during construction)
  • Tankless (gas) “on demand” water heater

Here is what a few of our happy homeowners had to say about our expertise and the results:

Cameron Smith built our house and we are very pleased with the result. He had the connections and ability to use various green building techniques that resulted in a very tight and energy efficient home. He used a spray foam insulation on all the exterior walls and the roof of the house. This added strength to the building and also sealed all places where any air, pollution, dust, etc... could leak into the house, thus providing a much tighter and healthier house, as well as being more energy efficient.
Also, solar hot water heating was installed, which has a quick pay-back and uses sustainable energy. Cameron arranged a solar panel generation system too. This uses solar panels on the roof to generate electricity which is sold back to the local electric company, reducing our monthly bills. It also generates solar credits which are sold as well and aide in making the pay-back faster. There are Federal tax credits for these installations.
Cameron and CL Smith Construction had the most experience of any other builder we found in these matters, and we are very happy with our new house and recommend his work highly.

We built our home with Cameron Smith 8 years ago. This house was CL Smith Construction Co.'s first Energy Star home. In the 8 years we have lived here our utility bills (gas and electric) have been approximately half of what our neighbors and friends of comparably sized homes have incurred. The added benefit has been the noise reduction both internally and externally.

"I researched green technologies extensively, but when it came time to building using green features, I wanted an experienced green builder. Cameron of CL Smith construction rose above the other builders. When I walked thru homes he built, I could see wall systems, insulation, geothermal HVAC, ERVs/HRVs, conditioned sealed crawspaces, etc. that employed features and technologies I had read about. Best of all, Cameron builds a beautiful home with careful attention to detail."
